Micro-surfacing 

A paving system of polymer modified cold mix asphalt. Like the former slurry seal, micro-surfacing is a high density mixture of emulsified asphalt, water, mineral powder etc. It is used for various road maintenance and reparation on wide pavement of roads & airports

While conventional slurry seal is applied as a means prolonging road service life in cities & countries worldwide, micro-surfacing is becoming more popular for its outstanding performance.

History of Micro-surfacing
¡¡¡¡
Micro-surfacing originated from Germany in 60s-70s.German scientists tried on conventional slurry seal, increasing its depth to see if they can fill the tracks without damaging the high-cost expressway. 
¡¡¡¡The scientists picked asphalt & its mix, adding polymer and emulsion, spread on deep tracks. This resulted in the forming of micro-surfacing.    
¡¡¡¡Micro-surfacing was introduced to America in 1980.Now it is regarded as the most economical way to deal with tracks and various road surfaces. Micro-surfacing is now wide applied in Europe, America and Australia, and is being promoted in many other countries.  
 

How to Apply Micro-surfacing£¿
¡¡¡¡Micro-surfacing is used to maintain road surface with special machine. This kind of machine continuously loads materials, which are calibrated precisely inside the machine, then thoroughly mixed and spread on the road.   
¡¡¡¡When the machine goes ahead, the mix is constantly sent to a spreader box with certain width, so it can be spread on the whole lane. Besides, the box has a special design ensuring more mix in more rougher tracks. A scraper will then strike off the surface.   
¡¡¡¡Newly treated pavement displays a puce colour, whilst it turns to jet black afterwards. Normally the roads can open to traffic in one hour. This treatment will make fully use of materials and reduce traverse joints. 

Usage of Micro-surfacing
¡¡¡¡Using different mix, technology and equipment, micro-surfacing can be applied successfully as below: 
¡¡1£®On high-speed traffic roads the application of 3/8 inch£¨9.5©L£©thickness will enhances brake functions, colour contrast, pavement life of national road and expressway. Normally the roads can open to traffic within 1 hour of application. Modern micro-surfacing machine can continuously spread 500 tons everyday, without traffic disruption. That is 6.6 miles(10.6 km) road pavement. 
¡¡2£®On airport runways thick micro-surfacing is employed to solidify the surface, avoiding the threat of gravelstones.     
¡¡3£®Thin-layer micro-surfacing, can quickly resume urban arterials and heavy traffic roads, without restriction on traffic flow and other loss.    
¡¡4£®Micro-surfacing also solve water-skidding problem of roads & airport runways in rainy days. The treated surfaces make safe driving even in rain.   
¡¡5£®Micro-surfacing of 3/8 inch£¨9.5©L£©or even thinner can be applied to most road surface. Each ton of micro-surfacing material can cover a larger area so that significant economic efficiency is achieved.  
¡¡6£®Road surface treated by micro-surfacing resists ruts in summer and resists chap in winter.  
¡¡7£®Micro-surfacing is suitable for asphalt and cement(usually concrete) surface, especially bridge deck which can bear little weight increase.
¡¡8£®Micro-surfacing is used as horizontal strickle staff.  
¡¡9£®Micro-surfacing is also suitable for areas of greatly diversified weather. It can lessen blockades in adverse weather, enhancing road service time.   
¡¡10£®Micro-surfacing adapts most to nighttime construction on heavy traffic roads, expressways, airport runways.  
¡¡11£®Micro-surfacing effectively saves energy under normal temperatures. In addition, it is environmentally friendly. The service life of micro-surfacing is commonly above 7 years.
